China`s top legislator starts visit to Russia
Khabarovsk, 22 May: A delegation of the National People's Congress (NPC, parliament) of the People's Republic of China headed by NPC Standing Committee Chairman Wu Bangguo arrived in Khabarovsk today, Oleg Lekhovitsev, press secretary of the Khabarovsk Territory governor, has told RIA. Since 1998 China has been the main trade partner of Khabarovsk Territory. The trade turnover with China reached 1bn dollars in 2003, making 57 per cent of the territory's trade turnover. Wu Bangguo is planning to meet territorial governor Viktor Ishayev on 22 May. Speaking to journalists at Khabarovsk airport, Wu Bangguo said that Russia and China "are the largest neighbours for each other". "Fundamental interests of our people lie in preserving peace, maintaining stability, state and regional contacts between the two countries," he added. [In a later report at 0528, ITAR-TASS news agency, Moscow, in Russian, quoted Wu Bangguo as saying that in the course of his visit he plans to meet Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov, Federation Council speaker Sergey Mironov and State Duma speaker Boris Gryzlov.]
