Chukotka governor Abramovich ignores invitation to meet Russian auditors
The Chukotka Autonomous Area is effectively bankrupt. The Audit Chamber, which recently carried out an investigation in this region, has come to this conclusion. Auditor Sergey Ryabukhin acquainted journalists with the specialists' conclusions today. He said the region's state debt as of 1 January was 9.3bn dollars [as heard], which is over 150 per cent more than its revenue. According to legislation, the maximum state debt of a constituent part of the Russian Federation must not exceed the value of its budget. The governor of Chukotka, Roman Abramovich, was officially invited to today's meeting of the chamber's board. However, only his first deputy, Andrey Gorodilov, turned up. Gorodilov said the auditor was right and added that the area's legislative assembly had already met today to debate amendments to budget and taxation legislation which would bring it into conformity with federal laws.
