Russia: Miners on hunger strike face the sack
The situation at the private mine Yeniseyskaya, where 170 miners have been on hunger strike [over wage arrears] for 5 days now, will be discussed at the State Duma sitting today. The protesters' health is deteriorating, doctors are monitoring their condition all the time. Meanwhile, it became known today that major redundancies will be carried out at the mine. It is planned to fire 269 of 389 employees, mainly among the protesters. Efforts aimed at finding ways out of the crisis remain fruitless. It is still unclear when the wage arrears will be settled.
