Duma ratifies compensation plan for air disaster victims MOSCOW. May 19 (Interfax) - All 405 State Duma members present on Wednesday voted to ratify the Russian-Ukrainian
agreement on paying compensation to the families of air passengers killed in an October 4, 2001 crash.
The agreement, which was signed in Moscow in December 2003, covers the death of passengers on a Russian airliner that
was shot down by a Ukrainian missile.
Under the agreement, Ukraine will pay $200,000 per passenger. It will pay Russia a lump sum of $7,809,000, which
Russia will distribute among 78 relatives of the passengers.
The State Duma CIS affairs committee noted that the agreement covers only the spouses, parents and children of the
passengers, but leaves out their grandparents, grandchildren and other relatives who were dependent on them. The
negotiators of the agreement made a mistake in allowing this, says a statement released by the committee. [RU EUROPE
