Son of murdered Chechnya leader will not run for president web site
Groznyy, 20 May: Chechen First Deputy Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov drew a line under claims of his possible
participation in the presidential election on Thursday [20 May]. "There are people capable of heading the republic
and carrying on the political settlement process, the antiterrorist fight, and social and economic reconstruction in the
team formed by Akhmat Kadyrov, who died in the terrorist act at the Dynamo stadium [on 9 May]," Kadyrov has told
Interfax.
"I was a member of that team, the same as the others. I fulfilled instructions, and I will not breach the
constitution adopted at the referendum under any circumstances," he said. Kadyrov said that his father regarded the
constitution as "his main achievement and the essence of his life. He thought that the constitution would eternally
protect Chechnya from shocks and the lure of unleashing wars under a separatist disguise."
"If we give way to temptation and break the constitution even once, it will become systematic and the
fundamental law will turn into a meaningless document," he said. "All officials of Chechnya should be as
diligent as before, so that positive processes do not slow down and destructive forces do not raise their heads,"
he said.
"We cannot allow a split in the republican administration during the preparations and the holding of the
election, because it may have a negative effect on the situation in Chechnya," he said. As for media claims that he
had recommended the election of Interior Minister Alu Alkhanov as Chechen president, Kadyrov said, "The candidate
who gains the majority of the vote will become president." "These rumours are being spread to split the team
of the late Kadyrov, but I would like to note that Alkhanov is an experienced general, who is backed by thousands of
people who are daily risking their lives in the antiterrorist fight," he said. "It is premature to speak about
candidates before the election campaign is officially launched," he added.
[ITAR-TASS news agency in Russian at 1554 gmt said that the Chechen electoral commission was expected to decide on
the election date at its meeting on 21 May. The elections will be probably held on 29 August, the agency said]
