20 May 2004 15:38 Putin meets TU leader Shmakov in bid to resume work relations dialogue [Presenter] Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Zhukov may head the three-party commission on resolving social and labour
relations. His nomination was approved today by President Vladimir Putin at a meeting with the chairman of the
Federation of Independent Trade Unions [of Russia], Mikhail Shmakov.
[Putin] Mikhail Viktorovich, how is the work of the three-party commission going? Has it come to a halt?
[Shmakov] Vladimir Vladimirovich, unfortunately it has, you're quite right, because in connection with the
government reorganization and all the hold-ups in appointing the individuals responsible, the government side of
Russia's three-party commission has not yet been formed. We are, therefore, insisting that the work of the
three-party commission should be stepped up immediately.
And so, Vladimir Vladimirovich, I'm turning to you since it's your prerogative to appoint a coordinator of
the Russian three-party commission by decree. I know that the deputy prime minister - and we only have one now,
Aleksandr Dmitriyevich Zhukov, - we think he's the person who should head up the work of the three-party commission
but of course that has to be your decision.
[Putin] I'll talk to him today. In general, I agree with you because it should be at a high level and the
coordinator should be someone with the chance to work with all the departments and ministries. I'll talk to him
today and I think that's what we'll do.
