Russia - New mobile customers hit 2.1 mil in April 2004
Russia: There were 2.1 mil new mobile phone users in April 2004, boosting the total number to 44.43 mil people for a 30.6% penetration rate at end-April 2004 vs 29.1% at end-March 2004, according to Advanced Communications + Media (AC+M), consultancy. There were 2.4 mil new mobile customers in March 2004. There were 389,341 new subscribers in Moscow in April 2004, taking the total to 12.81 mil customers for a 75.4% penetration rate. There were 4.07 mil mobile phone users in St Petersburg at end-April 2004, for a 64.1% penetration. MTS, cellular operator, had over 21 mil customers for a 37% market share at end-April 2004 vs 19.95 mil customers one month earlier. These figures include some subscribers in Ukraine and Belarus. Vimpelcom, mobile operator, took a 37% share of new customers in April 2004 vs MTS's 35%. It had 14.13 mil subscribers at end-April 2004 for a 32% market share. MegaFon attracted 18% of new customers in April 2004, raising its subscriber base to 8.13 mil people and maintaining its 18% market share. In Moscow, MTS took 55% of the net new additions, yet Vimpelcom's 6.15 mil customers at end-April 2004 gave it a 48% share of that market. Megafon, which had 1 mil Moscow customers at end-April 2004 for an 8% market share there, it claims a 47% share of users in the regions of St Petersburg and Leningrad. Nevertheless, Vimpelcom took a 53% share of new customers in these two markets vs Megafon's 2%.
