Hunger-strikers at Russian mine to take their case to Europe
The hunger-strikers at the Yeniseyskaya mine in Chernogorsk, which is part of the private company Yunal, intend to defend their rights in the international court in Strasbourg. They have communicated this in a letter to the president's representative in the Siberian Federal District, Leonid Drachevskiy. The 159 miners, of whom 47 are women, plan to continue their protest until they are paid their wage arrears. Two miners have already been taken to hospital; 25 have needed medical attention and have been told they should give up their hunger-strike. [According to ITAR-TASS news agency, Moscow, in Russian 0614 gmt 19 May 04 the letter was also sent to Russian human rights ombudsman Vladimir Lukin and local government leaders.]
