17 May 2004 11:32 RUSSIA RAISES INDUSTRIAL OUTPUT 7.4% IN JAN-APRIL MOSCOW. May 17 (Interfax) - Russia raised its industrial output 7.4% year-on-year in January-April 2004, compared to
a 6.3% rise in the first four months of 2003, the Federal State Statistics Service reported Tuesday.
Industrial production grew 6.7% year-on-year in April 2004, 6.6% in March, 8.7% in February and 7.5% in January.
Production dropped 3.8% from March 2004 in April.
The country produced 5.4 million tonnes of mineral fertilizer, up
13.9%, 356,000 cars, up 20.9%, 23,700 buses, down 1.5%, 729,000
millions square meters of material, 3.6% to 14.1 million pairs of
footwear, and 2.2% to 2.6 million tonnes of bread. Output of dairy
Excluding the impact of differences in the amount of working days, industrial output increased 6.4% year-on-year in
January-April 2004, with a 9.2% rise in January, 6.1% in February, 3.4% in March, and 6.7% in April. In January-April
2004, year-on-year industrial output growth was highest at 20.4% in glass and porcelain and 15.3% in machine
construction and metal processing. Production was up 11.2% in chemicals and petrochemicals, 10.4% in construction
materials, 8.5% in fuel, 7.5% in timber, wood, pulp and paper, 8% in food, 6% in ferrous metallurgy, 6.5% in printing,
4.3% in nonferrous metallurgy, 3% in medicine, 0.4% in milling and 0.3% in electricity. Production was down 8.9% in
microbiology and 1.1% in the light industry. In other industries, output rose by an average of 8.4%.
Russia produced 338 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, up 0.8% year-on-year, and 147 million tonnes of oil and
gas condensate, up 10.7%, 222 billion cubic meters of gas, up 3%, 95.9 million tonnes of coal, up 1.6%, and 31.2 million
tonnes of iron ore, up 5.2%. Production increased 4.3% to 17.2 million tonnes of ferrous metal roll and 12% to 2 million
tonnes of steel pipe.
