Russian defence minister objects to tenders for major defence items web site
Moscow, 13 May: Russian Defence Minister Sergey Ivanov objects to buying complex defence materiel such as submarines
or missiles in tenders as the enterprises that make them are monopolies.
Ivanov made this statement at a government meeting on Thursday [13 May] that discussed a bill on government purchases
of commodities and services.
If the bill suggested by the Economic Development and Trade Ministry is implemented, the government will have to
approve the majority of items on the materiel purchase list because such complex equipment is manufactured by single
producers in Russia.
"We cannot have a tender for, say, an intercontinental missile or a submarine, because only one plant makes such
items," Ivanov said. "I will have to convince Gref (Economic Development and Trade Minister German Gref -
Interfax) that we have only one producer and supply him with documents about all materiel components and
machinery," Ivanov said.
Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov said they should also check if Gref has access to classified information on such
matters.
