Foreign trade surplus climbs to $21.8 bln (Part 2)
MOSCOW. May 11 (Interfax) - Russia's foreign trade surplus grew to $21.8 billion in the first quarter of 2004, compared with $19.2 billion in the same period of 2003, the Federal Customs Service said Tuesday. Foreign trade turnover increased 21.8% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2004 to $51.3 billion, with exports up 19.2% to $36.6 billion and imports up 28.5% to $14.7 billion. Trade with non-CIS countries totaled $42.1 billion, an increase of 19.8%, with exports up 17.2% to $30.8 billion and imports up 27.8% to $11.3 billion. Trade with CIS countries grew 31.5% to $9.2 billion, with exports up 31.9% to $5.8 billion and imports up 31% to $3.4 billion. Russia's main trade partners in the first quarter were EU countries (36.5% of overall trade turnover, against 37.4% in the first quarter of 2003). CIS countries accounted for 17.9% (16.6%), Eurasian Economic Community countries - 10% (9.4%), Asia Pacific countries - 17% (15%), and Central and Eastern Europe - 12.6% (14.1%).
