11 May 2004 09:40 Baranov`s condition not life-threatening - Putin (Part 2) MOSCOW. May 11 (Interfax) - President Vladimir Putin said that, during his trip to Chechnya earlier on Tuesday, he
visited the hospital where Commander of the Combined Forces in the North Caucasus Gen. Valery Baranov, who was seriously
wounded in the terrorist attack in Grozny on May 9, is undergoing medical treatment.
"His life is not in danger. What is most important, he is in a 'fighting' mood and this inspires
optimism," Putin told the Cabinet on Tuesday.
Putin also said that he had visited the new barracks of the 46th interior troops brigade. "People were not
prepared for my visit, I'm absolutely sure. I made the decision [to visit the brigade] right in Chechnya,"
said Putin.
He said he had been "amazed by the up-to-date organization and condition of the brigade," adding that he
will award the organizers of this work. [RU EUROPE EEU EMRG POL PRO VIO HEA] sd tj <>
