Criminal case launched after miners go on strike over arrears in Russia`s East
The Russian Prosecutor-General's office will find out who is not paying wages to miners in Maritime Territory and why. A criminal case has been opened over wage arrears of miners who went on hunger strike on 11 May. The prosecutor's office in Vladivostok's Leninskiy district will deal with the case. Investigators know exactly who owns the open coal mine where the striking miners are working. The management of the Energiya Vostoka [Russ: Energy of the East] closed joint-stock company - the mine [Rakovskiy] is its affiliation - has been summoned to the prosecutor's office. Miners have not been paid since August 2003, their wages arrears amount to R60m. While the investigation is going on, the miners are continuing their hunger strike. They have been rejecting food for three days now, demanding that their wages be paid.
