12 May 2004 10:25 Top Russian general visits Chechnya, calls for stepping up fight against terror Moscow, 12 May: Following orders from Russian Minister of Defence Sergey Ivanov, army general Vladimir Boldyrev,
commander of the North Caucasian Military District, accompanied by a group of staff officers of the district, visited
Chechnya between 9 and 11 May, held conferences with the command of the Defence Ministry's group of mountain forces
and the 42nd Guards Motorized Rifle Division, which is on permanent deployment in the republic and visited a number of
units subordinate to them.
"General Boldyrev drew special attention to the need for units and combined units to enhance and step up
antiterrorist activities and to increase their vigilance," Col Igor Konashenkov, head of the district's press
service told ITAR-TASS today.
The North Caucasian Military District commander visited the deployment areas of all four motorized rifle and
artillery regiments of the 42nd division, deployed in Khankala, Kalinovskaya, Borzoy and Shali, an ITAR-TASS
correspondent was told at the Staff of the Combined Group of Forces in the North Caucasus today.
He familiarized himself with the local conditions, checked on the condition of the combat and welfare infrastructure,
the level of combat readiness, the organization of service in the troops, internal arrangements and the system to
protect and defend the units and military facilities.
