09 May 2004 04:55 Gryzlov calls Grozny terror attack challenge to civilization MOSCOW/ST. PETERSBURG. May 9 (Interfax) - State Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov has described the May 9 terrorist attack
in Grozny, which killed the Chechen republic's President Akhmad Kadyrov, as a challenge to world civilization.
"A terrible tragedy took place. People, including the legitimately elected Chechen president, were killed. An
act of violence against the entire Chechen people was committed," Gryzlov told journalists on Sunday.
"This has stopped being a fight for power: this murder on Victory Day comes as a challenge to civilization, a
challenge to humanity. The people who staged this terrorist attack have crossed all possible frontiers," he
said.
"We are effectively facing a challenge from those dark, inhuman forces that are ready to kill people no matter
what," Gryzlov said.
The Duma speaker expressed confidence that the criminals will be brought to justice. "Society should unite and
resist this evil and chaos," he said.
St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko offered condolences to the Chechen people after the attack.
"We are simply shocked by this great tragedy, this terrible terrorist attack staged on Victory Day. Every death
of civilians causes us feelings of profound grief and resentment. I would like to express condolences to the Chechen
people on behalf of all St. Petersburg residents," she said.
"I would like to extend my condolences to all relatives and
friends of Kadyrov, as well as the whole Chechen people," he
"I would like to believe that terrorism will be defeated in our country, and this evil will be stopped. The main
threat today is coming from global terrorism, which we have to deal with in various countries of the world on a nearly
daily basis," Matviyenko said.
Kadyrov and the republic's State Council Chairman Khusein
Isayev were killed when a powerful bomb exploded under the
Kalmykia's President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov expressed confidence that "the terrorists will not manage to
reverse the peace process in Chechnya."
"Our friend and colleague, Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov, has been killed. He was a true fighter and deeply
cared for his people," Ilyumzhinov told Interfax.
