RUSSIA: RUSSIAN ECONOMY SURGES 8 PERCENT IN FIRST QUARTER
The Russian economy expanded by 8 percent in the first quarter of 2004, the fastest rate in more than three years, the Economic Development and Trade Ministry said in a report. The expansion was the biggest since the fourth quarter of 2000, when the Russian economy grew 8.2 percent. The government expects the economy to grow 6.4 percent in the full year of 2004. The government's budget surplus amounted to 3.6 percent of gross domestic product in the first quarter, up from 3.4 percent in the year-earlier period. Government revenue totaled 16.9 percent of gross domestic product, compared with 17.4 percent a year earlier. - (EMEconomy.com)
