07 May 2004 01:37 THE RICH ARE ALWAYS WITH US Should Tokyo Sexwale, Patrice Motsepe and others now sit back in case there is someone else out there who could
benefit too? THE RICH ARE ALWAYS WITH US As a South African studying in Germany, I follow the stories on black economic
empowerment with great interest. It seems there is great criticism based on the fact that only a select group of black
individuals benefit from empowerment deals and are involved in almost all the transactions.
Nobody seems to come up with a more equitable solution. Should Tokyo Sexwale, Patrice Motsepe and others now sit back
and not take part in any more deals in case there is someone else out there who could benefit too? I think we have all
chosen to live in a capitalist democracy of sorts and should remember that there will always be a group that stands
above all others, be it through political connections, entrepreneurship, family wealth or other factors. The entire
Russian economy is in the hands of about 35 of the country's richest individuals (oligarchs). This situation is not
unique to us and we should concentrate on promoting a more educated society and on small business and other forms of
entrepreneurship. This is the way forward.
