HIGHER beer sales in Russia have helped a brewery half-owned by Scottish and Newcastle fend off fierce competition. Baltic Beverages Holdings, who S&N jointly own with Danish brewer Carlsberg, were losing market share and profits to their eastern European brewery rivals. But thirsty Russian punters, the world's fifth-largest market, increased BBH sales by seven per cent in the first quarter of 2004.
