GHERKIN CULTIVATION THRIVING UNDER CONTRACT FARMING (exports in Apr 2003-Mar 2004 valued at Rs140.7 crore)
Gherkin exports from Karnataka, which accounts for 90 percent of India's production, amounted to Rs140.7 crore against Rs105 crore in Apr 2002-Mar 2003 and Rs69 crore in Apr 2001-Mar 2002. Some 30,000 farmers have entered into contracts with agribusiness companies for producing gherkins in the districts of Kolar, Bangalore Rural, Chitradurga, Dharwad, Bagalkot, Hassan and Tumkur. Exports are made to Germany, US, Australia, Russia and France. State acreage under gherkins is 15,000 acres.
