Russian facility gives update on destruction of chemical weapons
Moscow, 30 April: A total of 41,360kg of lewisite had been eliminated at the Gornyy chemical weapons disposal facility in Saratov Region as of today. The Gornyy facility will be completely free of chemical weapons by 2005 as envisaged by chemical disarmament plans and Russia's international commitments. The facility is going to operate as usual during the holidays at the start of May, the regional information and analytical centre for the safe storage and elimination of chemical weapons reported. "The lewisite destruction technology does not provide for even brief downtimes," the information centre said. [passage omitted]
