Putin appoints new general director of Rosoboronexport (Part 2)
MOSCOW. April 28 (Interfax) - President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree appointing Sergei Chemezov as general director of Rosoboronexport, the presidential press service said on Wednesday. He has replaced Andrei Belyaninov, who was appointed director of the Federal Service for Defense Contracts in early April. "Chemezov's appointment as head of Rosoboronexport was quite logical, as he has been first deputy general director of the enterprise for the past 3.5 years, and is an exceptional specialist on arms exports," a source in the defense industry told Interfax on Wednesday. Chemezov was born in the village of Cheremkhovo in the Irkutsk region on August 20, 1952. After graduating from the Irkutsk Institute of National Economy and completing a course of study at the Military Academy of the Russian General Staff, he went to work in the Irkutsk Research Institute for Rare and Non-Ferrous Metals. In 1980, he began working with the Luch industrial association, and headed its office in the Democratic Republic of Germany from 1983- 88. He was then deputy general director of the Sovinterexport foreign trade association. In 1996-1999, Chemezov headed the foreign relations department of the presidential staff. In 1999-2000, he was general director of the federal unitary enterprise Promexport. In November 2000, he was appointed first deputy general director of Rosoboronexport.
