29 April 2004 10:46 Social benefits for Russian Far East must be preserved - presidential envoy Khabarovsk, 29 April: The Russian Ministry of Economic Development and Trade is not planning to cancel regional wage
supplements and benefits for the residents of the Russian Far North and the regions with a similar status, the press
service of the Russian president's envoy in the Far Eastern Federal District, Konstantin Pulikovskiy, said today
quoting the ministry's official response to Pulikovskiy's inquiry.
Pulikovskiy sees a benefits system which is less effective than before, as one of the main causes of the exodus of
people from the Far East and the deterioration of the demographic situation. He is confident that even a partial removal
of the current guarantees is out of the question.
"The outflow of people prepares the ground for a further decrease in the economic potential of the Far
East," Pulikovskiy said in his inquiry addressed to [Minister of Economic Development and Trade] German Gref.
