26 April 2004 10:11 RUSSIA`S UES TO BUY ELECTRICITY ASSETS IN POLAND ST. PETERSBURG. April 26 (Interfax-Northwest) - Russian national electricity company UES announced a plan on Saturday
to buy electricity assets in Poland.
However, UES chief executive Anatoly Chubais, who declared the announcement, declined to name any of the facilities
the company is interested in.
"Believe me, there are phases in business bargains where it's wrong to speak about what one wants to do. We
have a fundamental principle, it's written down in the 5+5 program - core foreign assets. We're not going to
buy any snackbars," Chubais told a news conference at the Interfax-Northwest headquarters.
UES began moving across Russia's borders in summer 2003.
Its first foreign bargain was to buy electricity facilities in Georgia from the U.S. corporation AES.
It has also acquired assets in Armenia, is seeking to buy into electricity distribution companies in Ukraine, has put
in a bid for the Slovak company Slovenske Elektrarne, which is on sale, and plans to carry out projects in the Baltic
countries.
Its efforts to buy assets in Moldova and Bulgaria have proved futile, however.
