27 April 2004 15:10 Putin says space research should help Russian economy, regions [Presenter] At a meeting with the leaders of the Russian aerospace sector, the president [Vladimir Putin] said space
should not only work for science but also give a practical payback to the economy.
[Putin] Our space industry can and should develop at a faster rate than other industries. Moreover, it is capable of
pulling up other sectors of the economy, becoming a means of solving many pressing tasks, such as consolidating
Russia's single economic space, developing telecommunications and navigation systems. Furthermore, there is a
question of ensuring effective prospecting and rational use of natural resources, and improving the quality of
forecasting of natural disasters.
Before our eyes, demand for the results of space activities is surging fast. It is also obvious that we are lagging
behind this demand.
I would like to point out that achievements in space should work efficiently in the interests of Russian regions,
help the growth of their economy and the development of state-of-the-art information technologies.
