27 April 2004 13:15 Russia`s Putin talks up importance of space research [Presenter] Russian president and those in charge of Russia's aerospace industry met in the Kremlin today and
discussed prospects for space exploration. Vladimir Putin drew attention to the fact that the use of the outcomes of
this research in the interests of developing the country's economy remain among the most important tasks in this
context. So far, however, the demand for space research tangibly exceeds what is on offer, said the president. New forms
of cooperation are needed to put the situation to rights and this includes cooperation with Russia's foreign
partners.
[Vladimir Putin] Activities in space represent a key factor of our development. These activities ensure Russia's
high status as a country which has state-of-the-art scientific technology and undoubtedly play a most important role in
the cause of our national security and economic growth and in raising our country's competitiveness.
Russia's specific geographical and geopolitical features, its enormous territory, the great length of its
borders and abundance of its resources require the effective use and development of our space potential.
However, despite a number of specific positive shifts, genuine success remains quite a long way off.
It is obvious that our space industry can and should develop at a faster rate than other industries. Moreover, it is
capable of pulling up other sectors of the economy, becoming a means of solving many pressing tasks.
