Progress in Moldova talks
The leadership of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic proposed that they and Moldovan authorities issue a joint declaration on the creation of a federation, the press service of Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov said following talks on the Moldova-Transnistria settlement. Russia, Ukraine, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Moldova and Transnistria took parts in the negotiations.

The declaration, which was drafted based on international experience in conflict management, is designed to improve relations between Transnistria and Moldova.

The Transnistrian Moldovan Republic was declared in the early 1990s. Moldovan authorities tried to re-annex it, and an armed conflict broke out. That conflict was settled with the help of Russian troops. Over the past ten years, the unification of Moldova and its breakaway republic has been discussed. Moldova believes that to solve the problem, Russia has to withdraw its troops from Transnistria. For their part, Transnistrian authorities see Russian troops as the only security guarantee. Most of Transnistria’s population speak Russian.
