Russia increasing investment in scrapping nuclear subs
MOSCOW. April 23 (Interfax) - Russia's annual investments in disposing of its nuclear submarines have reached about $70 million over the past three years, Russian Deputy Nuclear Energy Minister Sergei Antipov said. At the present time, Russia's investments in the disposal of its nuclear submarines are several times more than they previously had been, Antipov said while speaking at an international conference titled "G8 Global Partnership Against the Proliferation of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction" in Moscow on Friday. "Russia will not be able to resolve this problem on its own, and one should not expect that the program on scrapping nuclear submarines can be implemented exclusively using state budget money. International assistance is as vital for us as air," Antipov said. Russia received $49.7 million from abroad for disposing of submarines from June 2002 to April 2004, Antipov said. This year, the country expects foreign investments totaling about one billion rubles (about $34.5 million) for this purpose. [RU EUROPE ASIA EEU EMRG ENV] va tj <>
