Toronto, ON Background on Canada AIDS Russia Project: This panel is part of the Canada AIDS Russia Project, a three-year
C$2.5M project funded by the Canadian International Development Agency. The project focuses on building Russia's
capacity to confront the spread of HIV/AIDS, based on Canadian models and best practice. Background on HIV/AIDS in
Russia: Russia is facing one of the fastest growing HIV/AIDS epidemics in the world, with over 200,000 new cases of HIV
infection diagnosed in the last three years. Currently, less than 1,500 patients have access to treatment, while the
growing needs for treatment and care threaten to overwhelm the capacity of the Russian health system to deal with the
epidemic. Casey House Hospice has provided compassionate hospice support and palliative care since 1988 to people with
HIV/AIDS, Toronto, Canada.
