17 April 2004 16:19 Russia regrets EU, US vote against UN antiracism resolution Moscow, 17 April: Russia's Foreign Ministry today said that it regretted the vote by EU nations and the USA in
the UN Commission on Human Rights against a resolution on the impermissibility of inciting racism, racial discrimination
and xenophobia. "On Russia's initiative, the resolution was adopted by an overwhelming majority of the
commission's member states," the ministry said.
The resolution, it went on to comment, "states serious concern in connection with the rise of extremist
movements and political parties that incite racism, ethnocentrism and xenophobia, and spread the ideas of fascism and
racial supremacy". "The erection of monuments to SS soldiers, the staging of their marches and other similar
actions," it said, "desecrate the memory of fascism's countless victims, adversely affect the new
generation, and are absolutely incompatible with the commitments of the UN's member states".
"The resolution instructs a special rapporteur on modern forms of racism to study the situation and present the
appropriate recommendations to the next session of the commission," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
