14 April 2004 07:19 31% RISE IN DIAMOND SALES SETS KOLKATA GLITTERING IN `03 (DTC`s promotions and other marketing tactics brought
about a fivefold increase in Kolkata) Among the four metros in India, Kolkata has notched up the highest sales of diamonds, registering a record growth of
31 percent in 2003. Comparatively, Chennai recorded a growth of 28 percent, Mumbai 18 percent and Delhi 21 percent.
According to Diamond Trading Company (DTC), the erstwhile De Beers, the credit goes to the hard sell of
Kolkata's retailers for breaking into the traditionally gold bastion. DTC controls 75- 80 percent of the global
market, with mines spread across South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zaire, Canada and Russia. The company's
promotions and other marketing tactics brought about a fivefold increase in Kolkata. DTC is making every effort to
concentrate on India because it feels that the Indian market is poised to overtake Japan in terms of market share.
