News in Brief: Duma Layoffs
MOSCOW -- The State Duma will lay off 335 support staff by July 1 in an attempt to streamline parliament, Speaker Boris Gryzlov told President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, Interfax reported. In addition to 450 deputies, the Duma has a total of 1,801 employees, according to Oleg Kovalyov, chairman of the Duma Management Committee. The first in line to go will be those who have reached or will soon reach retirement age, Kovalyov said. .TX-..**********************************************
