RUSSIA UPS FOREIGN TRADE TURNOVER 13.4% IN JAN-FEB
MOSCOW. April 8 (Interfax) - Russia's foreign trade turnover grew 13.4% year-on-year in January-February 2004 to $29.8 billion, the Federal Customs Service reported. The trade surplus increased to $12.6 billion from $12.2 billion the previous year. Exports rose 10% to $21.2 billion and imports went up 22.7% to $8.6 billion. Trade with non-CIS countries rose 11.1% to $24.3 billion, including a 10% rise in exports to $21.2 billion and a 22.7% rise in imports to $6.6 billion. Trade with CIS countries increased 25% to $5.5 billion, including a 26.3% rise in exports to $3.5 billion, and a 22.8% rise in imports to $2 billion. Fuel and energy goods made up 56.6% of exports to non-CIS countries, against 65.9% in January-February 2003, metal exports accounted for 19.1%, against 13.2%, chemicals - 7.2%, against 6.3%, machinery and equipment - 6.4%, against 4.4%, and timber, pulp and paper - 4.6%, up from 4.3%. Exports rose 54.3% for ferroalloys, 71.5% for processed aluminum, and 24.4% for mineral nitrogen fertilizer. Machinery and equipment made up 44.7% of imports from non-CIS countries, against 38.4% the previous year. Food and food inputs The volume of gas exports to non-CIS countries remained unchanged. Exports fell 6.8% for nickel and 10% for copper. However, in value terms, exports of these goods surged 95.5% and 45.7% due to price hikes. Exports of machinery and equipment increased 57.7% in value terms. Fuel and energy goods made up 50.3% of exports to fellow CIS countries. Car imports from non-CIS countries surged 140%. Imports of frozen fish rose 36.7%, while meat exports fell by 70.9% and poultry by 52%. accounted for 18.1% of imports, down from 24.6%, and chemicals accounted for 17.6%, against 17.4%.
