Russian premier says social protection a government priority
[Presenter] [President] Vladimir Putin held a meeting today with Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov about preparations for the next government meeting, which will consider how to increase the effectiveness of government spending and improve the budget process. Mikhail Fradkov also informed the president about his meeting today with members of the Federation Council. The prime minister told senators about the programme for the socioeconomic development of the country over the next few years. [Passage omitted] [Fradkov, speaking to journalists] We will implement reforms to ensure our citizens have a normal life. We will do everything for this and we will focus our work mainly on the solution of social problems in the country. Obviously, decisions will be taken connected with ensuring economic growth, but these will be taken in such a way as not to worsen the situation of Russians. [Presenter] According to Fradkov, the government's work in this area will focus on reform of the tax and pensions systems, areas which directly affect each person.
