Oil leakage pollutes river in central Russia
Nizhniy Novgorod, 12 April: One and a half tonnes of fuel oil has leaked into the River Lysva from a severed pipeline, an aide of the head of the regional emergency situations directorate, Mikhail Fomenko, has told an ITAR-TASS correspondent. He said the accident occurred on the territory of the Lysvenskiy Metallurgical Plant yesterday morning. The fuel oil leaking into the river via the effluent disposal system was detected by the employees of the factory that is to blame. The enterprise immediately started to deal with the aftermath of the accident. Floating booms for removing the oil slick have been installed on the whole polluted water area and checks on the condition of the river are being carried out regularly. Emergency situations directorate experts believe that work to clean up the river will be finished by this evening.
