09 April 2004 13:58 Russia not to allow destabilization of situation in Ingushetia Magas [Ingushetia], 9 April: Russia's leadership "will not allow the destabilization of the situation in
Ingushetia". This was announced today by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Zhukov at a meeting with the
republic's President Murat Zyazikov.
"When new jobs are created, people start living better" - and this leads to the stabilization of the
political situation, the deputy prime minister stressed. According to him, last year Ingushetia received R500m through
federal target programmes. "I think that this year the interests and needs of the republic will again be taken into
account and this will be reflected in budget planning for the year 2005," Zhukov said.
Immediately after his arrival in the republic, Zhukov announced that the government had decided to allocate over
R500m for resolving social problems of Ingushetia's residents who have suffered in the Ossetian-Ingush conflict. He
noted that by 1 April R116m has already been sent to the republic. It is expected that by 1 June additional R400m will
be transferred.
The deputy prime minister today arrived in Magas for one-day working visit, during which he will take part in a
meeting on socio-economic development of Ingushetia. "Joint work must deliver results," Zyazikov noted at the
meeting with Zhukov. [Passage omitted: President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov have pledged support
for Ingushetia]
The republic is experiencing serious problems in the economic and social spheres, which have been caused, inter alia,
by a large number of refugees. Subsidies account for 80 per cent of the republic's revenues and over 60 per cent of
the working-age population is out of work.
