06 April 2004 04:42 Russia has over 42.26 mln mobile phone users MOSCOW. April 6 (Interfax) - Russia had 42.26 million mobile phone users on March 31, compared with 39.88 million a
month earlier, the research company AC&M Consulting reported.
Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) still has the most subscribers at 19.95 million, including 5.39 million in Moscow. Vimpelcom
is next with 13.35 million, with 6.03 million in Moscow, and then Megafon with 7.74 million, including 942,000 in
Moscow.
MTS holds 37% of the Russian market, Vimpelcom 32% and Megafon 18%.
In the Moscow region, MTS has 43%, Vimpelcom 49% and Megafon 8%.
The top ten Russian cellular operators also include Uralsvyazinform with 1.34 million, SMARTS with 1.26 million
subscribers, Sibirtelecom with 599,999, Nizhny Novgorod Cellular Communications - 431,000, Yekaterinburg Cellular
Communications - 265,000, Dal Telecom International - 258,000, and New Telephone Company - 154,000.
MTS took on board 51% of the new Moscow subscribers in March, while Vimpelcom gained 34%, but in St. Petersburg MTS
gained 31% and Vimpelcom 48%. Megafon took 15% and 10%, respectively.
MTS accounted for 32% of new subscribers in Russia as a whole, Vimpelcom for 34%, Megafon for 24% and the rest -
10%.
