05 April 2004 16:53 Russia - Mobile phone market reaches almost 17 mil units Russia: The mobile handset market continued to surge in 2003, with deliveries increasing by more than 89 percent to
nearly 17 million phones, worth more than Euro2 billion, according to a new IDC study. While camera phones did not sell
as well as manufacturers would have hoped, colour screens proved very popular, accounting for nearly a quarter of
handset sales, up from less than one in 40 in 2002. Siemens hung on to its lead in the Russian mobile phone market in
terms of volume in 2003, but only just. Motorola gained considerable market share and was just a percentage point behind
Siemens. Although Nokia dropped from second to third in the volume rankings, it retained the top spot in market value,
well ahead of second-place Siemens. Still, the most popular phone on the market was the Siemens A50, followed by
Motorola's colour-screen C350 and Nokia's long-serving 3310. At the top of the market, manufacturers were
disappointed that 2003 did not prove to be the year of the camera phone in Russia, with the models representing less
than 6% of sales.
