Moldova`s trade deficit goes up 60 per cent in 2003
Chisinau, 24 March, Infotag: Moldova's trade deficit increased by 60 per cent in 2003, reaching 612.4m dollars. The statistics and social studies department told Infotag that a positive balance was reached with seven CIS countries, including a positive balance of 120.7m dollars with Russia. Exports to Russia were worth 308.5m and imports - 187.8m dollars. Moldova's net trade deficit with CIS countries is 169.7m dollars. This was largely due to large imports from Ukraine which came to 309.3m dollars, 22 per cent of all imports from CIS countries. In the past year, Moldova exported goods worth 790m dollars, which was 146.1m dollars more than in 2002. Exports to CIS countries reached 423.7m dollars, to EU countries - 184.6m dollars, to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe - 123.7m. The largest export sectors were foodstuffs - 314.3m dollars, and textiles - 129.7m dollars. Imports reached 1.4bn dollars, an increase of 400m dollars on the previous year. Most goods were imported from CIS countries - 593.4m dollars. Imports from EU countries came to 398m dollars and imports from central and Eastern Europe - 241m dollars. Most imports to Moldova were energy and petrochemical products - worth 297.7m dollars. These came largely from CIS countries - 262.4m dollars.
