Russian MP regrets US aid to Qatar in arrest of Russians
Moscow, 22 March: Russia has still to find out from the USA the extent of and the reasons for its technical assistance in detaining Russian citizens in Qatar in the context of the recent murder of [Chechen separatist leader] Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev, chairman of the Duma International Affairs Committee Konstantin Kosachev told journalists today. He recalled that Deputy Assistant Secretary Steven Pifer of the US Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs had recently admitted that the US had provided technical assistance in arresting the Russians. "It is only to be regretted that the USA, which several months ago placed Yandarbiyev on a UN-compiled list of the world's most dangerous terrorists, did not provide technical and political assistance to the international community in exposing and preventing the illegal actions of an acknowledged international terrorist," the deputy went on to say. Kosachev stressed that the Russian side had been shown no evidence that the arrested Russians were involved in the death of Yandarbiyev and expressed regret at the actions of the Qatari authorities which continue to place every possible obstacle in the way of the detainees communicating with lawyers.
