Russia launches nuclear waste scrapping facility in Murmansk Region
The first and so far the only in Russia solid nuclear waste reprocessing facility has been constructed in Murmansk Region. It is located at the ship repair yard in the town of Polyarnyy. Over 5m dollars were spent to implement the project developed in cooperation with US and Norwegian scientists under the programme Protection of the Environment in the Arctic. Experts say that this facility will make it possible to reprocess and store solid nuclear waste in a safer way and also to reduce its amount by several times. Radioactive waste is placed in special containers and may be stored at the facility for 15 years. [C/r 0805-0843, video shows the facility and naval officers visiting it]
