15 March 2004 17:40 Tatar president urges Putin to embark on more radical reform Kazan, 15 March: "The people have expressed great hopes in Vladimir Putin with their high level of activity in
the Russian presidential elections," the president of Tatarstan, Mintimer Shaymiyev, told ITAR-TASS today. He said
that 82.4 per cent of the adult population in Tatarstan had voted for the incumbent president.
"But the second term will be no easier for the Russian president," he said. "The hopes of the
population have to be justified - to speed up economic and social reforms, and primarily, to raise the standard of
living of the people".
"In his statement at the election headquarters, Vladimir Putin spoke of his inclination towards more decisive
steps for the economic and social reform of the country, and we believe in this," Shaymiyev said.
