Company History
OEMK is an up-to-date steel mill that uses its own prereduced inputs (ore pellet, a direct reduction product) to smelt steel. The iron ore concentrate used to produce the pellets comes from the Lebedinsky Ore-Dressing Plant via conveyor pipe (26.5 km). Most of the plants equipment was purchased from leading foreign companies, such as Lurgi, Krupp, and Bacmetal.
March 31, 1974—The USSR Ministry of Foreign Trade in Moscow and a group of Western German companies signed an agreement of cooperation to set up a mill in the USSR based on the Mindrex direct iron reduction process.
November 10, 1982—First industrial production from pelletizing and oxidized pellet unit.
December 15, 1983—Metallization unit begins operation.
October 4, 1984—First industrial alloy produced in arc furnace.
December 31, 1986—First group of finishers of the 700 Mill begin operation.
June 26, 1992—OEMK’s steel products (sections and rolled products) are certified by the German company TÜV Berlin Brandenburg.
April 29, 1993—OEMK becomes an OAO (Open Joint Stock Company).
In 2000, the Oskol Electric Steel Works was able to win a respectable place among ferrous metal producers. Compared to 1999 levels, production of oxidized pellets increased by 7.0%, prereduced pellets by 7.4%, and rolled steel by 3.9%. The arc-furnace unit enjoyed particular success, as workers produced 1.12 times more steel than in the previous year, and for the first time in the plant’s history production exceeded 2 million tons. Along with increased production, the company also expanded the grades of steel it makes. In 2000, Oskol initiated the production of 28 new grades of steel.
The company has focused marketing on new customers within Russia and the NIS. Deliveries have predominantly increased to pipe, machine tool, and bearing producers.
Over the course of 2000, the company initiated 11 programs to install new equipment. Investment was mainly focused on building a new complex for a 350 jobbing and medium-section mill.
In 2001, OAO OEMK was restructured, and several divisions separated from the company, such as the construction materials division, the Metallurg Agricultural Company, the Metallurgstroi Trust, and the Silicate Brick Plant.
On September 1, 2002, the 350 mill began operation
