Minor accident reported at Russian nuclear power plant
Yekaterinburg, 9 March: The capacity of the reactor of the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant's third unit has decreased from 600 MW to 400 MW due to a technical mulfunction of its 4th turbine power generator, Nikolay Gerasimov, an assistant of the head of the Volga-Urals regional centre for emergency situations, told ITAR-TASS. Radiation on the nearby territory and in the town of Zarechnyy does not exceed the permitted level, the plant's officials told ITAR-TASS. The third unit is expected to resume working to its full capacity on Friday [12 March]. The fourth power unit with a 800-megawatt fast-breeder reactor BN-600 is under construction and should be commissioned by 2009. Russia now operates a total of 30 reactors at 10 nuclear power plants. The BN-600 is the most powerful fast-neutron reactor in the world.
