RUSSIA HAS 39.88 MLN MOBILE PHONE USERS
MOSCOW. March 4 (Interfax) - There were 39.88 million mobile phone users in Russia at the end of February 2004, compared with 37.96 million at the end of January, AC&M Consulting reported. Subscriber numbers increased by more than in February 2003 when 1 million new users were added. The percentage of users reached 27.5% of the population, against 13.8% a year ago. The subscriber base has doubled in the past 12 months to near 40 million. Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has 18.945 million subscribers, against 18.069 million on January 31 2003. Vimpelcom has 12.549 million (against 11.935), with 5.909 million Moscow subscribers, and Megafon has 7.163 million subscribers (6.737 million), with 888,148 Moscow subscribers. Megafon had the most new subscribers in St. Petersburg (43%) in February. As of February 29 2004, as in the previous month, MTS controlled 37% of the market, Vimpelcom - 31%, Megafon - 18% and other operators - 14%.
