The European Union hopes that Russia will be more constructive in settling the Transnistrian conflict, and it will withdraw its troops and weapons from Transnistria, according to agreements reached at the OSCE summit in Istanbul, Irish Minister for European Affairs Dick Roche said at a news conference in Brussels, according to the Moldovan government.
Mr. Roche said the EU hoped for progress in the five-way talks on the Transnistrian conflict. Russia, Ukraine, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Moldova and Transnistria are taking part in the negotiations. He stressed that the main role should be played by the OSCE, and the position of mediators should be clearer.
Mr. Roche said the EU would discuss Moldova’s proposal that the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, especially the Transnistrian section, should be monitored by the European Union.
