24 February 2004 03:12 Unemployment climbs in Jan MOSCOW. Feb 24 (Interfax) - There were 5.81 million unemployed in Russia at the end of January 2004, an increase of
40,000 over the month, as calculated by the International Labor Organization method, the State Statistics Committee said
Tuesday.
The level of unemployment accounted for 8% of the workforce, which totaled 72.2 million, or about 50% of the
country's population.
There were 1.64 million unemployed registered with the State Employment Service. The number of registered unemployed
