Polish opposition parties call for dismissal of infrastructure minister
Warsaw, 20 February: Opposition leaders in a joint statement Friday [20 February] demanded the ouster of Infrastructure Minister Marek Pol, whom they blame for "endangering Poland's energy safety". The statement came as a reaction to the recent stoppage of Russian gas supplies to Poland which caused delays in chemical industry. In their appeal leaders of the Law and Justice Party (PiS), Conservative-Peasant Party (SKL), Polish Peasant Party (PSL) and League of Polish Families (LPR) blamed Pol for the situation and stressed that Poland should not be solely dependent on gas from Russia. They also asked Prime Minister Leszek Miller to appoint a special government team to work out an energy programme allowing Poland to avoid energy threats over the next 2 years. They also demanded a government resolution "stating clearly" that diversifying gas supplies was a national priority for Poland. The radical Samoobrona farmer party and union were not invited to sign the statement.
