19 February 2004 20:22 Motherland party officially recognized; Russian presidential hopeful loses post Moscow, 19 February: The Russian Justice Ministry has made changes to the registration documents of the Russian
Regions Party, which is now to be called the Motherland [Rodina] political party. The ITAR-TASS correspondent was told
at the ministry's public relations centre that changes to the party's charter linked to the change of name
were among those recorded.
The decision to change the name was taken at last Sunday's [15 February] congress of the Russian Regions Party.
Also at that time, the congress relieved the leader of the Motherland faction in the State Duma, Sergey Glazyev [who is
contesting the Russian presidency], of his duties as co-chairman of the party. He had headed the Russian Regions Party
together with Dmitriy Rogozin.
Sergey Glazyev, who at the end of January declared his intention to set up a Motherland party on the basis of the
Motherland election bloc [that took part in December's parliamentary election], commented on today's Justice
Ministry decision, telling the ITAR-TASS correspondent that all he had left to do was to express "regret" at
such illicit action by one of the parties making up the bloc.
At the same time, the Justice Ministry stresses that the documents submitted by the party were in full compliance
with the law and lawyers had no complaints.
