Belarus increases transit rates for Russian gas
Minsk, 19 February: The government of Belarus has unilaterally increased rates for the transit of Russian gas, Belapan has learnt from Sergey Kupriyanov, the press secretary of [Russian] Gazprom Chairman Aleksey Miller. Kupriyanov said that on 19 February Belarus increased the gas transit rate from 16 Russian roubles (about 0.5 dollars) to 1.02 dollars per 1,000 cu.m. "Gazprom is ready to sign a gas transit agreement for 2004 on these terms and to continue talks on gas deliveries," Kupiyanov said. He said that the "sticking point" in relations with Belarus is the unacceptable terms offered by Belarus for the creation of a gas transport joint venture [on the basis of the Belarusian gas distributor Beltranshaz], namely the price of Beltranshaz shares.
