13 February 2004 09:52 WORKFORCE COULD BE CUT BY 10 MLN BY 2016 MOSCOW. Feb 13 (Interfax) - Russia's workforce could go down by 10 million people by 2016, State Statistics
Committee Chairman Vladimir Sokolin said at a press conference.
The reduction is mainly due to a drop in the birth rate. The current birth rate is "1.3 per woman, and there is
no basis to suggest that this will increase." Simple population reproduction requires the rate to be above 2.23, he
said.
The lower birth rate will mean that by 2016, there will be 516 pensioners for every 1,000 members of the workforce.
The current figure is 445 pensioners. It was at 400 pensioners in 1989.
